The men and women of Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) have their work cut out for them in ensuring safe and hassle-free travel in tollways under their watch all year round.
"We are implementing a more extensive motorists assistance program starting this Holy Week to further improve our services for safe and convenient travel to our motorists traveling between Metro Manila and Central and North Luzon provinces," announced MPTC's dynamic President and CEO, Rodrigo E. Franco.
In a recent media gathering attended by Motoring Today it was announced that starting this year, MPTC, the holding company of NLEX, SCTEX, and CAVITEX, is expanding the coverage of its annual "Safe Trip Mo Sagot Ko" (SMSK) motorist assistance program to include not only this year'sHoly Week, Undas, and Christmas holidays but also the forthcoming long weekends specifically Araw ng Kagitingan (April 7-9), National Heroes' Day (August 25-27) and Bonifacio Day (November 30-December 2).
The SMSK is MPTC's annual motorist assistance program intended to ensure hassle-free travel during holidays by enhancing all services in all three MPTC-owned expressways.
"Apart from expanding the coverage to the long weekends, the SMSK will also render 24-hour free towing services for Class 1 vehicles during the specific periods instead of the usual 12-hour operation," added Rod, MPTC's friendly top honcho in his usual soft-speaking demeanor.
Motoring Today also learned that from March 23 to April 2, NLEX-SCTEX traffic personnel will devote extended working hours and intensified patrol coverage to closely monitor and manage the expected surge of vehicles in Balintawak, Mindanao Avenue, Bocaue, Sta. Ines, Tarlac, and Subic-Tipo toll plazas. Additional patrol and incident response teams will also be ready to assist motorists at all interchanges and fuel stations.
Additionally on the peak hours starting today,March 28, 29, and April 1, the Balintawak Toll Plaza will open 24 toll collection points while Mindanao Avenue and Tarlac Toll Plazas will open 10 and 29 toll collection points, respectively. Portabooths and portable toll collection equipment will be used to speed up transactions.
By April 1, the Bocaue Toll Plaza will have a maximum of 62 toll collection points in operation for motorists going back to Metro Manila.
During the same period, CAVITEX will deploy more traffic patrol officers and security personnel to manage the traffic and assist motorists. Ambulant tellers will be on standby to facilitate faster toll transactions.
Road works at the NLEX-SCTEX and CAVITEX will be suspended beginning March 23 until April 2 unless safety repairs are required.
On March 28 to April 1, MPTC and its partners will set up SMSK Motorist Camps and provide free services such as free calls and Wi-Fi, free drinking water, free basic mechanic services and first aid treatments in designated locations along NLEX, SCTEX, and CAVITEX.
Free towing services to the nearest exit will be offered to Class 1 from 6:00AM starting today,March 28 to 12:00 midnight of April 1.
Indeed, MPTC leads the way in world-class tollways management and operations.
Way to go, Rod.
It may not have been known to some, including myself until last week's launch of its all-new RZ4E Blue Power engine that Isuzu has more than 80 years of experience manufacturing diesel engines and with more than 27 million diesel engines produced.
In a statement released during the event it was announced that Isuzu now sits on the Number One position in various commercial vehicle categories in 29 countries worldwide, including the Philippines.
"The global trend of producing smaller capacity engine that has an output of larger engines has come to Isuzu," said IPC President Hajime Koso in his opening remarks during the event . "The new RZ4E Blue Power engine, carries with it our years of experience as a diesel engine manufacturer. Carefully developed to provide optimized power and torque; this engine performs efficiently, with much care for the environment, running with less noise & vibrations, and is very easy to maintain," he added.
During the intimate luncheon launch at the Makati Shangri-La exclusive to the motoring media, Isuzu Philippines stated that given its new design and quite a number of new engine parts installed, the new RZ4E performs efficiently which has been proven in the recent fuel-efficient testing conducted by the company. During their testing, IPC conducted their test using the Isuzu mu-X RZ4E LS-A variants running alongside its current Isuzu mu-X 2.5L variants which presently runs economically based on previous testing. The Isuzu mu-X RZ4E LS-A MT recorded37.27 km/l, while theIsuzu mu-X RZ4E LS-A AT logs a total of 35.80 km/l. The test is conducted under the supervision and verification of the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) following the Department of Energy (DOE) testing parameters and standards.
The all-new RZ4E Blue Power engine is set to replace Isuzu's existing 2.5-liter variants and will be made available for both the Isuzu mu-X and D-MAX models.
"Cheaper by the dozen" was the old adage I remembered when I learned of a recent multi model launched undertaken by newly minted Triesenburg Auto Corporation (TAC), the exclusive distributor of "new kids on the block" JAC passenger and commercial vehicles in the Philippines.
During the 8-model launch composed offour SUVs, two sedans andtwo commercial vehicles,Val de Leon, a former Nissan Motor Philippines mainstay and now Group General Manager of TAC stated, "We are honored to partner with JAC Motors as the exclusive distributor of its innovated vehicles with cutting-edge design and technology. Triesenburg Auto Corporation has become a part of a significant change, a transformation which would set a new trend in the car industry and the competition."
JAC Motors in the Philippines will showcase its new breed of passenger and commercial vehicles in its showrooms in Westgate Center in Alabang, which is now open and the soon to be opened in Sta. Rosa, Laguna and Pasong Tamo, Makati .
Indeed, with more players coming in, the local auto industry is getting merrier.
The mantra for car buyers before reaching out for their checque books, which is "Test drive it, before you buy it," lives on as the 2018 Auto Focus Summer Multi Brand Test Drive Festival presented by Phoenix Fuels withPulse Technology comes alive from April 13 to 15 right after theHoly Week at theConcert Grounds of the Mall of Asia.
Brand new models from the country's top manufacturers and importers like Ford, Honda, Jeep, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota shall again be available for test drive to the public right at the venue's test drive course or in a specific test drive route around the MOA.
With Phoenix Fuels with Pulse Technology as the 'Official Fuel' of the multi brand test fest, the public can expect thousands of pesos worth of fuel coupons and lubricants to be raffled off to lucky test drivers.
Remember, "Test drive it before you buy it." We'll see you there!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ray Butch Gamboa graduated from the College of Arts and Letters of the University of Sto. Tomas. It was a course that should have been preparatory to a law degree, but the call of broadcasting aborted his plans.
At the age of 16, while still a student, Butch tried his hand at disc jockeying, landing a job at Mareco Broadcasting Network’s AM stations DZBM and DZLM. From there, Butch moved on with his illustrious career as a popular disc jockey, riding the airwaves of Bob Stewart’s middle-of-the-road music at DZXX, and ending his disc jockeying career at ABS-CBN’s DZYL and DZQL.
From there, he stayed on with ABS-CBN, covering live the proceedings at the Manila Stock Exchange and eventually entered into the world of television sales as an account manager for the premier channel of ABS-CBN Channel 2.
In the early 70’s, at the outbreak of Martial Law, Butch was one of the thousands of professionals who woke up jobless when then President Marcos declared the new status of the nation. With the closure of ABS-CBN, Butch ventured into different fields outside of broadcast. He tried his hand and with ease and success at export (Costume jewelry), real estate (brokerage), and restaurants (fast food).
In 1987, after the revolution, with the broadcast industry back to its free state, and with its irresistible call ringing in his ears, Butch made his inevitable comeback and pioneered in a local motoring show, producing Motoring Today on Channel 4 and co-hosting with local motor sports’ living legend Pocholo Ramirez.
After 4 years, he ventured into another pioneering format by producing and hosting Business & Leisure, which was originally aired on ABS-CBN’s Channel 2. The format eventually espoused similar ones in other different channels. But the clones in due course faded away leaving the original staying on airing on Channel 4 and eventually on Shop TV on Sky Cable’s Channel 13.
The following year, the pioneering spirit in Butch spurred him to produce another TV show, Race Weekend, also on Channel 4, covering circuit racing at the Subic International Raceway after the motor sport’s hiatus of 17 years. But when similar shows with duplicated formats sprouted, he decided to give way and ended the program after a year, although still enjoying unparalleled viewership.
In 1998, when the local automotive industry was in a slump, Butch contributed his share to help the ailing industry by producing another popular motoring-related show, this time exclusive to the automobile and its industry—Auto Focus, which became a vehicle for local automotive assemblers and importers to showcase their products and dwell on the industry’s latest technological developments.
In 2003, Butch teamed up with his brother, Rey Gamboa who was a former Shell executive and presently one Philippine Star’s business columnist to co-produce and co-host the TV show Breaking Barriers on Channel 13. It is a talk show that features guests who are in the news and in the middle of controversies. The program ventures to draw deeper insights into current issues to learn how they impact to our daily lives.
Today, Motoring Today on its 28th year of service to the general motoring public still enjoys its unprecedented loyal vierwership nationwide while Auto Focus, after 16 years has firmly established its niche viewership among automobile enthusiasts and on the other hand Business & Leisure is on its 24th year dishing out current business issues and lifestyle features.
Today, aside from writing weekly columns for the Philippine Star (Motoring Today on Wednesdays and Business & Leisure on Saturdays) and executive producer / host of weekly TV shows (Motoring Today, airs Sundays on Solar Sports Channel 70, Business & Leisure, airs Tuesdays on Shop TV, Sky Cable Channel 13 and Auto Focus airs Thursdays on Shop TV, Sky Cable Channel 13, Ray Butch Gamboa is currently the Chairman and CEO of Sunshine Television Production and Marketing Services Corp., President of Gamcor Management and Development Corp., Chairman of Asia-Pacific Realty Corporation, President and Chairman of Socio-Communication Foundation for Asia and Founding Chairman of the Society of Phil.
