The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is
looking to improve free Wi-Fi at MRT-3 stations and extend this to trains,
with plans to introduce cashless fare payments.
DICT Secretary Henry Aguda has announced plans to enhance free Wi-Fi at the
MRT-3, expanding it to trains in the future and ramping up bandwidth in
collaboration with telecom providers.
In collaboration with the Department of Transportation, the DICT is also
working on implementing contactless fare payments, enabling transactions
via credit and debit cards, e-wallets, and smartphones.
During an inspection of MRT-3 stations, Transportation Secretary Vince
Dizon noted shorter queues and wait times due to the introduction of
four-car trains during peak hours.
Each four-car train can carry up to 1,576 passengers, significantly
increasing capacity.
Meanwhile, the expansion of free Wi-Fi services to Light Rail Transit Lines
1 and 2 is still under study.
Most of us already have smartphones with e-wallets. Wouldn't it be great
to just tap our phones at terminals to get to ride the trains?
