The Department of Transportation is planning to allow unconsolidated
jeepney drivers and operators to return to their former routes-even after
the deadline for mandatory PUV consolidation has lapsed.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon assured operators that a mechanism
would be in place before the end of Holy Week.
Mar Valbuena, president of transport group Manibela, confirmed that
Secretary Dizon had disclosed this plan during a meeting on March 31. The
meeting followed a series of transport strikes protesting the consolidation
mandate.
It appears the government has blinked-again-in its standoff with groups
opposing the PUV modernization program.
