The Department of Transportation (DOTr) anticipates major companies will
participate in bidding for the EDSA Busway's operations and maintenance.
In news reports, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista revealed that the
terms of reference are nearing completion, after which they will hire a
consultant for the bidding process.
Bautista told reporters that roadshows will be held to attract private
bidders, with the bidding expected to conclude this year. The EDSA Busway
is set to operate under a public-private partnership (PPP) by 2026.
Several companies have expressed interest in the bidding, though Bautista
did not name them.
However, the Megawide group had earlier submitted an unsolicited proposal
to take over and manage the EDSA Busway but the DOTr opted for a
competitive bidding process.
Business groups have urged the government to keep the EDSA Busway
operational and turn it over to the private sector for sustained funding.
Commuters benefitting from the EDSA Busway are naturally opposing its
closure. And they are supported by management groups and urban planning
experts who say the EDSA Busway serves more people than those travelling in
cars.
