The DOTr is expanding its Active Transport program to make roads safer for
cyclists and pedestrians.
A Philippine News Agency report said Undersecretary Jesus Ferdinand Ortega
confirmed that the DOTr will continue to establish bike lanes and facilities
nationwide, aiming for 2,400 kilometers of dedicated lanes by 2028.
The initiative also includes constructing walkways for pedestrian safety.
The report noted that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. directed the DOTr
and the DPWH to prioritize active transport to promote healthier and more
sustainable travel in line with the National Transport Policy and the
Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028.
Under the plan, pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles are accorded the
highest priority in the hierarchy of road users.
Commuter and consumer groups, as well as cycling and active transport
enthusiasts, should hope and pray government is not just paying lip service
to this very commendable presidential directive.
