The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board is reviewing a
petition from various transport groups seeking a minimum fare of P15 for
public utility jeepneys.
In a statement posted on its official facebook page, LTFRB chairman Teofilo
Guadiz III said the agency acknowledges the difficulties faced by drivers
and operators due to escalating fuel prices and the rising cost of living.
He added that while the LTFRB is committed to ensuring that their
livelihood is sustainable, it must also balance this with the welfare of
commuters who are equally affected by the current economic conditions.
The LTFRB chief that the agency is conducting a thorough review of the
petition and will take into account all pertinent factors, including fuel
price trends, inflation rates, and the overall economic effects on the
riding public.
He assured all stakeholders that it would hold public hearings and
consultations to promote transparency and inclusiveness in the
decision-making process to deliver solutions that are fair and equitable
for both transport operators and commuters.
Another old song goes, what goes up, must come down. But can this be
true for fuel prices and transport fares?
