Metropolitan Manila Development Authority director for enforcement Victor
Maria Nuñez is suggesting fines and penalties for all traffic violations
need to be raised further.
In a radio interview, Director Nuñez of the MMDA Traffic Discipline Office
said that it may be time to raise penalties on traffic violations to serve
as a deterrent and scare drivers who recklessly violate traffic rules.
Nuñez said that after MMDA started imposing hefty fines ranging from a
minimum of 5,000 pesos to 30,000 pesos, fewer motor vehicles ventured onto
the EDSA Busway lanes.
A year ago, the Metro Manila Council approved the stricter penalties for
EDSA Busway violators, which not only included the hefty fines but also the
suspension and then cancellation of licenses to drive for repeated
violations.
There are those who say hefty penalties for traffic violations will only
embolden the rogues among enforcers to extort motorists more. That is also
something to think about when suggesting hiking fines.
