Also last year, the DOTr officially launched the PUV Modernization Program.
However, the announcement was briefly followed by different reactions from
the PUV operators and even from netizens. But the DOTr is committed in
making public transport safe and enjoyable for the commuters, thus their
efforts to finally start the program.
The DOTr has launched the initial route in Tacloban, through a private
corporation which issued the franchise for the "missionary route".
For Metro Manila, the department says that they are also looking into
modernizing initial routes. The DOTr added that they have already
shortlisted the routes and they are now studying on how to provide the
analysis of how many should be the most efficient number of units that can
operate on a certain route.
With regard to the PUV operators who are opposing with the modernization
program by the government, the DOTr says that they are consistently meeting
with them to hear their concerns.
Even with all the negative reactions that the DOTr has been facing
regarding the PUV Modernization Program, the department is still firm in
saying that these initiatives are for Filipinos to experience a much better
traffic situation in 3 years time.
