Majority of the commuting public use land transportation in a daily basis.
The DOTr through the LTFRB are working hand in hand and looking for ways to
improve the land transport system.
The Department of Transportation announced that the PUV Modernization
program will be launched this May. They said that the PUV Modernization
program will develop the mass transport system in the country.
According to the DOTR, the program will start with the release of the
Omnibus Franchising Guidelines or OFG that aims to improve public land
transport.
The guidelines also include the "Fleet Consolidation" which aims to limit
the number of operators in a route. This way, according to the
Transportation Department, the dispatching of the vehicles will be more
organized. It also requires the operators to have their own safety officers
to ensure that the vehicles are safe to use on the roads. For more safety
measures, the DOTR says that it has been proposed for the jeepneys to have
the entrance and exit on the right side. Aside from it, the use of an
Automated Fare Collection System for PUVs has also been proposed.
The DOTR also requires the vehicles to use Euro 4 standard engine which is
environmental friendly. It says that these guidelines will ensure that
approved franchises have safe, comfortable, and environmentally sustainable
vehicles.
The PUV Modernization program of the government will surely help the mass
transportation system of the country. We do hope that involved transport
sectors will sit down with the government in implementing this project.
